History

Prior to the arrival of the Europeans, the Lenni Lenape people lived here for centuries. Their towns were typically situated along the region's waterways. The earliest Quaker settlers, the Gilpins and the Brintons, actually used caves as their very first shelters, and they were befriended by the Lenni Lenape. A ferry began to operate on Brandywine Creek in the 1730s, and ferry service continued for almost a century. On September 11, 1777, the Battle of Brandywine resulted in a defeat for Gen. Washington and his troops, but it still marked a turning point in the war because the Continental Army was not fully vanquished. The railroad arrived in 1858, and the beautiful valley became a summer destination for the upper classes of Philadelphia.
