Downingtown PA
The borough of Downingtown is known for its American history, compassionate citizenry and family-focused community.

History

The robust history of Downingtown predates the American Revolution. The borough was originally a small village on the western frontier, initially named Milltown for the mills erected in the 1700s. A Quaker immigrant, Thomas Downing, developed a complex of mills, which continued to operate and prosper through the generations. After the war of 1812, the name of Downingtown was adopted. The borough demonstrated an amazing ability to flourish through waves of change; from stage coaches to railroads, mills to manufacturing operations, and unsettled land to park development. Today, Downingtown real estate includes 20 historic structures within the East Lancaster Avenue Historic District.
